Who we are
Lab Head
Luis O. Lucifora
PhD Biology - CONICET's Independent Investigator My main scientific interests have been always related to sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras, known collectively as cartilaginous fishes. I have conducted research on ecology, diversity, taxonomy, evolution, functional anatomy, and conservation of cartilaginous fishes. My work has been useful for the implementation of conservation measurements of sharks in Argentina. Currently, I am heading both an inter-institutional project on ecology and conservation of freshwater stingrays of the Río de la Plata Basin, and a project focusing on identifying population trends and threats to marine cartilaginous fishes. |
Technician
Agustín Solari
PhD Biology My research has focused on the ecology, diversity and conservation of aquatic vertebrates. During my PhD, I assessed the relationships between environmental factors and the fish assemblage composition in the Río de la Plata estuary. Afterwards, I moved to the Atlantic Forest of Misiones, where I am conducting research on the population biology of broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris). This project will produce information that will allow to evaluate the effectiveness of protected areas to conserve this population. Supervisor: Luis O. Lucifora |
External Lab Members
Lorena B. Scenna
PhD Biology - CONICET's Assistant Investigator My early research has focused on skate biology. My PhD dealt with life history and ecology of skates of the genus Bathyraja that occur off Argentina. Then, I started my postdoctoral project on the effects of persistent organic pollutants on the reproductive output of coastal sharks, rays and chimaeras with different reproductive modes. As a CONICET's Investigator I still continue with this project. Supervisor: Luis O. Lucifora; Co-Supervisor: Karina S. B. Miglioranza |
Paula A. Cristini
PhD Biology - CONICET's Postdoctoral Fellowship I have recently begun to work at the interface of biology and engineering. During my PhD, I focused on the study of freshwater mollusk preservation in contemporary settings and its implication on fossil record. Currently, I am applying Micro Raman Spectroscopy to produce an objective technique for counting growth rings in vertebrae of skates. Supervisor: Josefina Ballarre; Co-Supervisor: Luis O. Lucifora |
Gabriela E. Delpiani
PhD Biology - CONICET's Assistant Investigator During my PhD I studied the life history of the southern thorny skate (Amblyraja doellojuradoi), a poorly known species of the Patagonian continental shelf. Currently, I am conducting a taxonomic revision of the shark genus Squalus in Argentina. My current work integrates morphological and molecular data. Supervisor: Luis O. Lucifora; Co-Supervisor: Juan M. Díaz de Astarloa |
David E. Sabadin
PhD Student - CONICET's Doctoral Fellowship I am applying species distribution models to estimate the geographic distribution of cartilaginous fishes on the continental shelf off Argentina. My ultimate objective is to obtain an estimate of the geographic distribution of diversity, endemism and chondrichthyan assemblages on the Argentinean shelf. Supervisor: Luis O. Lucifora; Co-Supervisor: Daniel E. Figueroa |
