Press coverage of our work
In our lab, we believe that making local people aware of the ecology and conservation issues of aquatic predators is key to succeed at conserving viable populations of these species in healthy ecosystems.

We conducted the first formal analysis of population trends of obligate freshwater elasmobranchs. It showed that the river stingray (Potamotrygon spp.) assemblage of the middle and lower Paraná River (Argentina) is declining due to overfishing, and that only one species (P. motoro, pictured) has a stable trend. Our work was covered by Science Magazine and a number of Argentinian and international news outlets. See our press release and the media coverage here:

Our paper assessing potential threats to the short-tailed river stingray (Potamotrygon brachyura), the largest obligate freshwater elasmobranch in the world, was widely covered by newspapers and radios from the northern half of Argentina and southern Brazil. See the press release here, and the media coverage in the links below:

The declining trends of four species of large coastal sharks off northern Argentina, identified using unconventional data, appeared in national newscast media in Argentina. These species are the broadnose sevengill shark (Notorynchus cepedianus), the sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus), the school shark (Galeorhinus galeus) and the copper shark (Carcharhinus brachyurus). Our analysis showing the effects of large floods on the population of broad-snouted caimans (Caiman latirostris) of the Iguazú River had ample coverage by national- and provincial-level news media in Argentina and abroad. Higher water levels are forecasted, if the current trend in climate change continues. See our press release, and the news coverage here:

We participated in "Expo Tiburón" (Shark Exposition), an interactive science fair whose objective was to educate people about cartilaginous fish and to make people aware of the conservation issues of these fishes. We were in charge of the freshwater sharks and rays section. Our participation was covered by local newspapers:

We coordinated the writing of an editorial in Página 12, a major national newspaper of Argentina, in response to an opinion column of an authority of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires with a wrong interpretation of the Theory of Natural Selection. Our response was co-signed by 253 scientists from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, France, Paraguay, Switzerland and the United States.
